We are happy to announce that Professor Shen Hou from Peking University, one of the highest ranked professors in China, will come to the Amerika-Institut next Thursday, July 5, 2024. Prof. Hou's interest is in urban and environmental history. Currently she is working on a new book about Pacific cities.
Cities by the Sea: Comparing Urbanization on the Pacific Rim, Qingdao and Los Angeles
Qingdao and Los Angeles are two cities located on two side of the Pacific rim. Why did they, radically different in cultural origins, cometo resemble each other in size, cityscape, and perhaps even in temperament? Why has each grown from inconspicuous beginnings to giant metropolises over the past century, and why have they drawn millions to move there? These are the questions this talk intends to answer.
