We are happy to announce the workshop

"Art, Beauty, and Visualizing Social Change: The Politics and Aesthetics of Environmental Photography”

which will take place on February 6, 2025, at the Amerikahaus Munich.

We are looking forward to a keynote by Prof. Steven Hoelscher (University of Texas at Austin) entitled “Visualizing the Environment: American Landscape Photography from Ansel Adams to Dawoud Bey.” The lecture is co-organized with the Bavarian American Academy and will take place on February 6, 2025, at 6:30 pm. The event will also be streamed via the Amerikahaus’ YouTube channel.

Steven Hoelscher is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Liberal Arts, Stiles Professor of American Studies and Geography, and Faculty Curator of Photography at the Harry Ransom Center, at the University of Texas at Austin. He is an expert in the history of photography, research on race and racism, North American and European urbanism, social constructions of space and place, and cultural memory.

The keynote will be preceded by a symposium. Among others, there will be presentations by Bergit Arends (The Courtauld, London), Julia Faisst (TU Dortmund), Simone Förster (Stiftung Ann und Jürge Wilde), Conohar Scott (Independent Researcher and Photographer), and Joshua Shannon (University of Maryland).
